Three of the best beaches in Istria

Upmarket, exhilarating and family fun – Three great beaches on Istria’s stunningly diverse coastline. For centuries the Adriatic Sea has carved into the magnificent peninsula of Istria and as result, long sandy beaches intermittently interrupted with quirky and interesting coves and thousands of lagoons and islands are a hallmark of Croatia’s largest peninsula.

This stunningly diverse Croatian cape is blessed with many wonderful beaches, many of which have  great facilities and are exceptionally clean, leaving tourists with the difficult decision about which beach to settle down on and become ensconced within besotting surroundings.

If you are fortunate to be faced with this predicament then you will appreciate being informed about three of the best beaches in Istria.

Cape Kamenjak

With its pebbly bays, natural stone terraces and lucid water, it is hardly surprising that the beach at Istria’s Cape Kamenjak (pictured above) has been described as being a ‘cult destination’.

Situated approximately ten miles to the south of the city of Pula, the Cape Kamenjak is a protected nature reserve and remaining totally undeveloped is part of its beauty. This barren and desolate cape is criss-crossed by dirt tracks and is blanketed by wiry heath plants and is the perfect place to explore for secluded bathing spots lying inconspicuously behind quirky rock formations and areas of dense pine trees.

Medveja Beach

If your aspirations for a day out at the seaside are filled with something a little more up-market and luxurious than the exhilaratingly barren beaches of Cape Kamenjak, then heading to Medveja Beach at Lovran may might just what you are looking for.

Asides lying at the foot of luscious pine-laden hills on the eastern side of Istria and providing plenty of up-market family entertainment such as a bouncy castle style fun park just off the shore, Medveja’s main attraction the Hemingway lounge/bar that sits right on the beach. This exquisite bar attracts a swanky beach crowd all year-round who enjoy sipping cocktails and chilling out to the sound of music in an area of astonishing natural beauty.

Lone Bay, Rovinj

With a long and diverse series of small bays located within easy walking distance of the exciting town of Rovinj, and with the neon lights of the town as a backdrop, the shingle coves known as Lone Bay are one of Istria’s most picture-postcard coastal resorts.

Part of Lone Bay’s unique appeal is that is combines a chic package-holiday with laid-back fun for all the family, as one minute you can be sipping champagne on a chic lounge-style beachside bar and the next being hurled across the sea on a banana boat!
