3 of the best beaches for windsurfing on Lanzarote

Being situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the waves touching the many beaches of Lanzarote can be, in a word, big.

From April until September, the winds generally blow from a north easterly direction, creating a fantastic setting for windsurfers, while in the winter months; the wind is generally more changeable and stronger, curbing an even more demanding path for the most confident of windsurfers.

Either way, the island of Lanzarote is an ideal haven for windsurfers. Take a look at three of the best beaches for windsurfing on Lanzarote that cater for all abilities.

Las Cucharas, Costa Teguise

This 600 metre stretch of golden sand in the town of Costa Tequise is one of the best known spots for windsurfing on the island. With trade winds that blow side-shore, which are particularly strong in the afternoon, several of Lanzarote’s biggest windsurfing schools are located on Las Cucharas Beach and is one of the reasons why it has hosted the windsurfing World Cup Tour.

With several jetties protruding out to sea from Las Cucharas, the shelter they provide makes it a great location for beginners, particularly in the morning when the sea is usually calmer. While the winds that whip up the waves in the afternoon ensure that Las Cucharas Beach is an exhilarating ride for more experienced and professional windsurfers.

Jameos del Agua, North East Lanzarote

For those who are serious about surfing on some seriously high waves and are proficient with a board, a trip to Jameos del Agua in the north east of the island should definitely be on your agenda. With powerful waves breaking at various points over the volcanic reef, surfing at Jameos del Agua is certainly not for amateurs.

Matagorda

Matagorda Beach can be found just to the north of Puerto del Carmen and is perfect for those seeking a surf in more ‘tranquil’ conditions. Although despite the calmer weather conditions, white horses are no strangers to the water here, hence Matagorda’s popularity amongst the less experienced windsurfers.
