Ibiza – The home of the best diving locations in Europe

World-renowned for being one of the ‘clubbing capitals of the world’, Ibiza’s aptitude of being of the best diving locations in Europe is one lesser known asset of this loveable Spanish island.

Dedicated to bringing Ibiza’s less acknowledged strength out of the shade and into the limelight, this summer, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) recognised Ibiza as being the best diving locations in Europe. In celebration of this fantastic honour, the Ibiza Tourist Board has launched a brochure, which offers details about the diving scene on Ibiza.

Aptly made out of ‘Rock Paper’, a material that is 100% waterproof and tear resistant, the brochure is the ideal diver and water sport enthusiast’s ‘bible’.

The book provides in-depth information about the 20 best diving locations on Ibiza, including how easy access is to the site, the level of difficulty the diver will be faced with, the proximity of interesting underwater vestiges, such as wreckages, including Don Pedro, the merchant cargo ship that sank off Ibiza’s main port in 2007 and, being 140 metres in length, is the biggest underwater wreckage in Europe, the minimum and maximum depths required, whether or not a torch or compass will be needed, as well as GPS location.

So what exactly makes Ibiza the best diving locations in Europe? The crystal clear waters that surround Ibiza have a lot to do with why 12 PADI associated diving centres have occupied Ibiza’s stunning coastline. Visibility in such clear water stands at between an incredible 20 and 40 metres, providing almost unrivalled opportunities to witness some of the fantastically diverse marine life that the Iberian coast is home to.

In fact so impressive, extensive and varied is the wildlife around Ibiza that in 1999, UNESCO listed the lush and verdurous meadows of Neptune grass scattered around the island on the World Heritage list, for providing a happy and peaceful dwelling for a wide range of species. As well as being crystal clear, the sea temperature here is pleasantly mild all year round.

It is this combination of fascinating underwater landscapes, record-breaking wreckages, mild and crystal clear waters and a dedication to provide truly memorable diving experiences to divers of all abilities, that compelled PADI to recognise Ibiza as Europe’s best diving location.
