Minho in Northern Portugal

Minho in Northern Portugal

Bordering Spain’s Galicia, the region of Minho is the most northern region in Portugal. Due to its close proximity to Galicia, Minho shares many of the Celtic influences and cultural traits of its Spanish neighbour. The unique region of Minho in Northern Portugal consists of 23 municipalities, the capital being the city of Braga.

Minho in Northern Portugal

The ancient city of Braga is not only the oldest city in Portugal but is one of the oldest Christian cities in the world. As Braga has been awarded with the title of ‘European Youth Capital 2012’, this year would be a fantastic time to visit this ancient town.

This proud and inimitable northern Portuguese region is scattered with medieval architecture, ancient monasteries, cosy churches and glorious cathedrals, demonstrating the area’s long and spiritual history and heritage.

Asides from its diverse and stunning landscapes, ranging from rushing and mighty rivers to gently rolling hillsides sprinkled with colourful and fragrant flowers, its many sites of historical interest that have remained untouched for centuries, and its quirky interesting villages perched upon pretty pastures, Minho is famous as being the founder of caldo valdo soup and nowhere serves it quite as authentically and deliciously as in the mesmerising region of northern Portugal.

If you are lucky enough to be heading to Minho in Northern Portugal sometime soon, we recommend a stay at Casa da Fontainha (pictured). This beautiful and spacious 19th century villa has two bedrooms and has been restored to an extremely high standard whilst retaining its original character.

An emphasis on being outdoors is evident at Casa da Fontainha, with doors that open out onto a spacious sunny terrace, shaded by vines. When you’ve finished your ‘al fresco’ wining and dining with the in-built barbeque, why not take a dip in the villa’s exquisite private pool, enhanced significantly by the magnificent views this property is blessed with?

Sandy beaches are just minutes from Casa da Fontainha, providing the perfect day relaxing on the beach for all the family. If you are a seafood fan then you will especially pleased with the nearby village of Vila Praia de Ancora, which is thriving with many great fish restaurants, all in competition to serve the freshest of fish!

A week’s rental at Casa da Fontainha starts at £795.
