The legendary Ibiza hippy market Punta Arabi in Es Cana

Blow a week’s holiday budget in one afternoon at Ibiza’s legendary hippy market!

With nightclubs pumping out tunes until dawn, with legendary 24 hour beach parties, and with an unmatchable hedonistic party spirit, it stands to reason why year after year clubbers return to the island of Ibiza for there annual party ‘fix’.

Although Ibiza’s world renown cannot be pinned solely on its inimitable capabilities of clubbing and another celebrated feat of Ibiza that goes comparatively overlooked is the island’s famous market scene, with the Hippy Market Punta Arabi in Es Cana, being at the forefront of Ibiza’s vibrant market scene.

Ibiza’s irrevocable hippy roots can be traced back to the early 1960s when a flock of painters, artists and designers headed to the island to be inspired by Ibiza’s favourable light, unique atmosphere and ‘freedom of expression’. It was during this, what only could be described being ‘Ibiza’s hippy movement’, when markets began to emerge and become established across the island, where many handmade delights, such as jewellery, paintings, ornaments and clothing were sold and enthusiastically lapped up by both locals and tourists.

Since this particularly colourful, creative and artistic period in Ibiza’s history, the island’s markets have never looked back and the original Punta Arabi hippy market at Es Cuna has grown and evolved and is now one of the town’s most popular and well-attended events.

From April until October from 10am until 6pm, this pulsating hippy market is held in the grounds of the Club Punta Arabi in Es Cuna. Here a plethora of stalls can be found clustered under the boughs of the pine trees for some much-needed shade and dotted around the winding narrow streets between a mesh of whitewashed houses and buildings.

Visiting this colourful and vibrant Ibiza market is an experience in itself but is particularly enjoyable if you are a fan of handmade ‘hippy’ treasures –
