A converted old mill country house in Tuscany – Mulina d’Anna

There is always something comforting about converted old buildings. It could be down to the warmth of their history or maybe just the simple fact that they don’t build them with such robust materials any more.

 

Mulina d’Anna is a converted old mill set in the vast and beautiful wine country of Tuscany. They say that the world is undergoing a wine shortage but you won’t feel it in this house being surrounded by row after row of Italian vines.

This fine old mill is packed with original features such as solid wooden beams, reassuringly holding up the ceiling. Tiles typical of Mediterranean adorn the downstairs floors, whilst upstairs strip wood floors are resonant of English parquet flooring but with a more random pattern.

This three-bedroom, three bathroom country house is spread out over three floors and exudes a tasteful blend of comfortingly old and practically modern. Take the master bathroom for example; being so grand, spacious and stylish, dominated by a huge free-standing bath, it has the look of a bathroom you would see in ‘Hello’ magazine.

In fact every room in Mulino d’Anna has a glamorous yet authentic vibe. Large windows let in floods of light, while the integrity of the original mill has been retained demonstrated impeccably by the old stone fireplace, the centrepiece of the open plan kitchen/dining room.

Surrounded by pencil thin trees, a characteristic of this part of Italy, the exterior is equally as delightful with the countryside beckoning as soon as you step outside. Nestled in the middle of wine country orderly rows of vines on the gently undulating hills are crying out to be recreated by a brush and easel.

A small brook runs by the house and has probably done so for centuries, the bloodline of the mill before taps and piped water were invented! A huge 11 metre-long pool breaks up the intense foliage and verdure of the setting.

There is no denying you are in Tuscan territory here and more to the point you are in the province of Siena. The spa town of Chianciano is only 3 km away from Mulino D’Anna and is said to be the healthiest town in the whole of Italy. Seven kilometres from the old mill takes you to the picturesque town of Montepulciano.

Whilst not exactly undiscovered this old town is well below the radar of mass tourism. Built in 1580 ancient sites abound Montepulciano, as well as many great restaurants and bars.
