Galicia's coastal town of Baiona

A Look at Galicia’s Coastal Town of Baiona

The culturally-, gastronomically- and geographically-distinct corner of north-west Spain known as Galicia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Galicia's coastal town of Baiona

The beautiful coastline of this relatively undiscovered part of Spain is scattered with beautiful towns, villages and hamlets, where time seems to have stood still for years.

One such town goes by the name of Baiona. This charming coastal town is located in the Pontevedra province to the south of Galicia and thereby enjoys a more enviable warm and sunny climate than more northerly parts of Galicia.

Baiona boasts a long and interesting history. Its quaint old town is located behind Baiona’s pretty fishing port. The old district is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, lined with pretty houses that are typical of Galicia.

Many a café, bar and restaurant can be found hidden within the streets of Baiona’s old town, meaning it’s not difficult to find somewhere interesting to relax in with a refreshing drink and some authentic Galician cuisine.

A key landmark of Baiona’s architecture is the Castelo de Monterreal, located on the edge of Baiona. With an elevated position, this well-preserved castle has fantastic views of the coastline that stretches from Baiona as far as the eye can see.

Being flanked by a verdant landscape of hills, meadows and forests, Baiona is the ideal base for walking and taking in the remarkably green and varied countryside Galicia is blessed with.

When staying at Baiona, you can have the best of both worlds – spending a relaxing day on a beautiful beach or exploring northwestern Spain’s beautifully scenic countryside.
