- Carnival declared of International Touristic Interest.
- Carnival 12 – 22 February
The whole city gets involved, the perfect occasion to visit, enjoy the ingenuity and humour of the local gaditanos. Cadiz completely transforms itself during carnival. You can hear music from every street corner, every single person dresses up in fancy dress, some of the costumes are true works of art. The most humorous and ludicrous carnival to take place on the Iberian peninsular. It is famous for the satirical groups called chirigotas, who perform comical musical pieces. Typically, a chirigota is composed of seven to twelve performers who sing, act and improvise accompanied by guitars, kazoos, a bass drum, and a variety of noise-makers. These diverse spectacles turn the city into a colourful and popular open-air theatre for the entire two weeks.
