Classic Car Rally Mallorca 2014
If you are a fan of classic cars then you simply must visit Mallorca in March. The Classic Car Rally of Mallorca has been held every March since its inception in 2005. There are two categories in this popular event – one for the die-hard, race-ready and another for the casual – but proud – classic car owner.
Starting from Puerto Portals on Mallorca’s south coast, the circuit covers 400 kilometres of Mallorcan roads and attracts drivers from all over Europe.
Citroen, Porches, Alfa-Romeo, Triumphs, Skodas Jaguars, Saabs and the rest appear from a bygone age when cars were more a work of art than a life necessity. Perhaps these vintage vehicles would not be considered very aerodynamic today but who cares when you look at all that sparkling chrome and beautifully-styled bodywork.
If you are going to be in Mallorca on 13 -15 March, 2014 and are a classic car enthusiast, you are in for a treat as these mechanical lovelies take to the streets with the throaty roar of pure unadulterated carbon inefficiency.
If you do attend this year’s event be prepared to see some famous faces among the crowds. In the 2009 the entire Top Gear team held one of their many challenges at the rally. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond had to buy a pre-1982 car for under £3000, take it to the rally and enter the race.
They each had a £25 bet with one another on who would win. In the end it was Clarkson that won the money in his Austin Healey Sprite Convertible. Poor Richard Hammond was last with the worst points total that the event had ever seen. Hammond had chosen a 1953 Lanchester Fourteen and most of his points were deducted due to breakdowns.
The three had to take a co-driver around with them. Jeremy’s companion was a man who spoke no English. Richard had an English mechanic who was even smaller than himself and lucky James had a page three model called Madison Welch – the mind boggles!
All in all the Classic Car Rally of Mallorca is a fun, exciting and educational day out for all the family.
