Discover traditional Cretan culture in Villa Milio

Villa Milio is a characterful one-bedroom cottage in the heart of the traditional village of Roustika on the island of Crete. Milio’s owner, Emilia, together with her husband, an architect, transformed this tiny cottage into a unique and deceptively spacious villa designed for two people.

Internally, high wooden rafters, exposed brickwork and wooden floors contrast the stylish lighting that is fairly uncommon in traditional Cretan homes. Large internal archways lead from the open-plan living/dining room into a small kitchen, which, with an oven, microwave and dishwasher, is practical and convenient.

Stylish stairs lead to Milio’s cosy and inviting double bedroom.

Outside is designed equally well and makes the most of the limited space. In the centre of the grassy outdoor courtyard is a quaint plunge pool. A pergola built with sturdy stone posts provides the ideal spot to wine and dine in the shade.

Although being a villa located in the town, a couple of popular tavernas are just a short walk from Milio.

Villa Milio on Crete

The pretty town of Roustika literally means ‘rustic’ in Latin, so, as you can imagine, it is brimming with character and intrigue.

Roustika is situated on the foot of the Ambelos hill at an altitude of 290 metres. There are several great ancient monuments and buildings to see in Roustika, including the Panaghia Church, with interior walls covered with frescoes that date back to the 1380s. Another site of interest is the Cultural Centre Anestis and Manolis Anagnostakis, which includes the private collection of Manolis Anagnostakis, a leading poet of the postwar generation whose father was born in Roustika.

This interesting Crete town is also home to the Museum of Traditional Greek costumes. Yes, it’s safe to say if you want to immerse yourself in traditional Cretan culture, Roustika is the place to do it.

A fun day on the beach is also there to be enjoyed at the sandy Episkopi Beach that stretches for 3.5 kilometres, and is just 12 kilometres from Milio. Whilst just 10 kilometres from the cottage is Preveli Beach, bordered by a fertile valley with rivers on either side.

Whether you’re seeking traditional Cretan culture and history or sunbathing and relaxation on a sandy beach, the cottage of Milio has a wealth of intrigue and entertainment on its doorstep.
