Discovering Ferreries on Menorca’s South-East Coast

Ferreries is a small community situated in the centre of Menorca, it is the highest town on the island and features an historic old town area, with cobbled streets and multi-coloured houses. Ferreries was founded in the 18th century when the Church of St Bartholomew was built. An annual festival for St Bartholomew is held at the end of August.

This region of Menorca is stunning, with excellent walking trails for anyone wanting to explore the lovely countryside, which particularly comes to life in the months of spring. The area is extremely hilly but tends to become more gently rolling in the north.

Ferreries is renowned for its industry, with artisan footwear, furniture and jewellery being the main exports; there are several shops in the old part of town displaying these goods. The footwear proudly displayed in the many shoe shops of the town is traditional, replicating the style worn by people working in the fields of the island in past times.

Ferreries’ Farmer’s Market is famous with locals who come to buy the island’s finest produce, such as local cheeses, biscuits, and cakes. It is held on Tuesdays and Friday. Visiting the market is something of a tradition for the local people of the town. Many of the delicacies sold at the market end up as dishes in some of the island’s best restaurants.

The Castell de Santa Agueda is a popular, iconic attraction. Built circa 1230, the castle was destroyed and abandoned by the Kings of Aragon, but it remains one of Menorca’s most attractive rambles. For the fit, it is reached by a 45-minute climb up a very ancient, part Roman track, over 2,000 years old. The views when you finally get there are truly superb. The place comes with legends of buried biblical treasures.

Starting just outside Ferreries is a spectacular 6-kilometre gorge, one of the island’s best, stretching as far as the south coast behind Cala Galdana. The ravine was declared Common Heritage of Mankind in 1998.
