FIS Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup in Croatia

If you want an excuse to jet off to Croatia this winter, then there could not be a better one than to see the FIS Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup beginning on January 4 2011.

Known as the ‘most glamorous event in skiing’, next year’s FIS Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup could not be held in more thrilling surroundings. Taking place in the Sljeme ski resort, located high upon the mighty Mount Sljeme in Zagreb, Croatia, the ladies Alpine Skiing World Cup 2011 promises to be a blinder.

This highly exalted competition involves competitors travelling to the world’s most exclusive ski resorts and effortlessly gliding down death-defying slopes to score points. The individual events include slalom, giant slalom, downhill, super G and combined. But it is the competitor with the highest overall points that wins the illustrious title of Alpine World Cup Overall Champion.

Whilst the Alpine Skiing World Cup is open to both men and women, the different sexes often compete at different locations. Luckily for the ladies they are competing at one of the world’s lesser known ski resorts, but due to its blatant beauty, is quickly gathering speed in the popularity stakes.

The landscapes surrounding the ski resort are simply stunning, which, due to Croatia’s relative anonymity from the uglier traits of mass tourism, remain unspoilt. Whilst the facilities for skiers at the Sljeme ski resort are deemed good rather than superb, this is reflected by the prices at the resort, which are considerably cheaper than many other European alpine ski resorts. The slopes provide for great skiing for all abilities, whilst a day spent away from the slopes and in Croatia’s historical, charming and culturally captivating capital Zagreb is advisable, if not only to sample the delicious local cuisine.

Not many ski resorts combine quality skiing, value for money, the chance to dine amidst some ancient architecture in an old and fascinating capital and above all witness one of the most prolific events on the skiing calendar. If you are unsure where to head to this winter for a sensational skiing holiday, make its Sljeme in Croatia, you will not be disappointed.
