Why Lanzarote is the ideal place for sports enthusiasts
The beautiful island of Lanzarote has warm weather nearly all year round, rarely getting cold, so you can enjoy outdoor sports any time you wish. The island can be breezy, which is a blessing to surfers and kite boarders. Even the top surfing exponents rush to places like the Costa Teguise, La Santa and Famara, with their legendary tube waves. For the less experienced, ‘stand up paddle’ is a more tranquil board sport, which is also popular on Lanzarote.
Under the island’s translucent waters there is a whole new world to explore, surreal volcanic rock formations, shipwrecks and numerous species of fish.
Running and cycling have also become very popular on Lanzarote, the breeze being extremely welcoming. The roads on the island are relatively quiet; a cyclist’s and runner’s dream. There is no shortage of dirt trails and off track courses across Lanzarote since the government created a network covering 200 kilometres of cycling routes. These routes range from being suitable for gentle beginners, all the way to those to masochistic veterans!
Lanzarote’s arid beautiful terrain with its volcanic cones and unique vineyards is an ‘out of this world’ backdrop for any sport. The tallest part of the island is the Peñas Del Chache, rising to 671m. Lanzarote’s mostly flat terrain is suited to a wide range of sports, which also makes it accessible to people of varying abilities, and also those with disabilities.
With the increased interest in sporting activities, several good quality sports centres covering a wide range of sports have been developed, especially in La Santa and Costa Teguise. If you’re n the area, why not stop over at Cotijo de Cabreron? A lovely four-bedroom villa offering stunning views, with a quiet, secluded swimming pool to relax in.
Lanzarote holds several local and international sporting competitions, these range from triathlons (including Ironman) the Lanzarote International Marathon, and world championship windsurfing competitions. Many of the Canary Islands cater for specific sports, but for overall coverage of a wide range it is hard to beat Lanzarote and all it has to offer.
