Stunning ‘castle’ villa in Galicia – El Castillo de Playa America

Situated on a beauteous headland at the end of a sweeping beach of golden sand overlooking the waves tumbling onto Galicia’s Playa America, this wonderful house is a landmark rather than merely a villa.

El Castillo

In fact so grand is El Castillo de Playa America, that if somebody showed you a photograph of it and then told you Prince Charles and Lady Camilla were staying as guests of the King of Spain here, you would not doubt them for a second. You would instantly think this stately beach front property is reserved for the world’s most privileged.

Yes, it’s safe to say that we our proud to make El Castillo de Playa America the latest impressive addition to the fabulous houses on our Galicia portfolio.

Standing sturdy and strong El Castillo has the look of a house that would be well able to fend off a pirate attack. Huge granite blocks, typical of Galicia, is the chosen building material, which adds to the authenticity of its castle-semblance.  Balconies are to be enjoyed outside each of the five bedrooms where you could be forgiven for being tempted to give the people down on Playa America a ‘royal wave’. The vistas from the house are second to none.

You open the gate and you are on the beach, it’s that simple. As you might imagine, the gardens are impressive too. Mature palm trees blend with dazzling Bougainvillea, framing extensive and well-manicured lawns. The ‘castle’s’ ramparts are the perfect place to rest with your afternoon cup of tea or evening glass of wine as you gaze over the gardens, the beach and the sea.

The inside of the house is uncluttered and utterly stylish. The stand out piece to each of the bedrooms are the inviting French doors, which lead onto the balcony terraces. The walls are simply painted, which compliment the simplicity of the ceramic tiled floors. The lounge area  has a comforting fireplace, which would be great for taking the chill out of the salty sea air on out of season visits.

You can breath in some of the fresh, salty air by wining and dining outside on El Castillo de Playa America’s barbecue area. A pergola shades the dining area, providing some much-needed protection from the sun in the summer months. Although cooling down should not be a problem as a  huge  private pool invites you to take a plunge. Despite being in such close proximity to the beach and all the typical activities that go on on a beach, it is not difficult to find a secluded spot in El Castillo’s  huge garden, which is as big as a small public park!

Galicia’s coastline is heavily indented by river estuaries and as a consequence Playa America lies opposite another stretch of golden sand, which provides a far more interesting vista than that of a simple horizon.

Ten minutes in either direction along the coast will bring you to an interesting town. One direction will take you to Paxon, a characterful little fishing village complete with handy fresh fish restaurants. The other direction takes you to Baiona. Christopher Columbus landed in Baiona in 1493 with news he had discovered the New World. You can visit a replica of the ‘Pinta’, which brought the news to the town, who’s people were the first to hear of a new continent on the other side of the Atlantic.
