Summer Festivals in Crete

If you’re jetting off to Crete this summer then you may just want to check align your diary with one or two of these fantastic Cretan festivals for the lovers of culture and wine.

Experience traditional dance at Heraklion Festival

Between the months of July and September you can catch any of the following festivals:

01 July until 15 September – Summer festivals in Chania and Heraklion

If you love your ballet, theatre, opera and dance then you’re in luck! You’ll find international performers and musicians taking to the stage alongside locals – the atmosphere is electric.

Early August – Chania Rock Festival

OK… so not for those looking for a little culture, but still loads of fun. If you like tyour heavy rock then this is the place for you. Perhaps even send the teenagers off for a night a peace!

End of July until 10 August – Rethymno hosts Renaissance Festival

Taking place in the old town, the festival sees a wide variety of music and dance acts, art exhibitions and pantomimes in the Renaissance style.

Wine lovers are in for a treat too as there are many wine festivals on the island during the summer. You’ll celebrate traditional Cretan and Greek folklore and get a chance to taste some delicious wines:

End of July – Cretan Wine Festival in Rethymno

10 – 15 August – A five day festival in the tiny village of Archanes

Help this friendly little village celebrate its wine produce… but Make sure you take some Alka-Seltzer!
