The village of Sissi – Crete’s best kept secret
The village of Sissi lies on the coast of north-eastern Crete, approximately 45 kilometres from Heraklion, the island’s largest city. Sissi is a wonderfully picturesque seaside village with its own tiny harbour and void of crowds, noise and pollution.
Hidden away at the end of a small winding lane off the main coastal highway, Sissi is indeed a very pleasant surprise. Life goes by at a much less hectic pace than the popular nearby resort of Malia.
The main street in Sissi is an untidy and unpretentious affair, which should by no means put you off. As charming as Sissi’s modest streets are the real gem of village can be found when you reach the traditional little port lapped by an aquamarine ocean. The sunlight turns the wavelets beyond the breakwater into a million dancing diamonds as the beauty of Sissi is revealed.
The spot is idyllic and photogenic and could well be the epitome of a holiday postcard vista. It is also an active harbour that provides safety for fishermen returning from the perils of the sea. Women deal with the day’s catch on the Warf as the boats return to this fabulous and unsuspected tiny deep-water enclave. Diners can have the pleasure of watching this traditional fishing activity unravelling while tucking into a delicious meal of fresh fish in a nearby seafront taverna – Memories to savour for a long time.
On the opposite end of the harbour there is a pretty beach and if you fancy a dip in the crystal water you won’t need to ask for anyone’s permission! – All you need is your costume, towel and the will to get wet.
Whilst Malia and Hersonissos have their own place in a Cretan holiday itinerary, it is remarkable that a place as tranquil as Sissi can be found so close to these lively resorts.
Sissi is a bit of a secret and long may it stay so! This may have swayed you towards a holiday on the island, You really should have a look at Vintage Travel’s luxury villas in Crete.
