Three great things to do in Lazio

Bordering Umbria and Tuscany but with a mere snippet of the tourists of Umbria and Tuscany, Lazio is crying out to be discovered. Although in spite of Italy’s lesser known region’s relative obscurity, there is plenty to do in ‘Italy’s wildest corner’.

Check out three great things to do in Lazio.

II Bagnaccio Hot Spring

Spend an afternoon relaxing in the warm volcanic waters of the Bagnaccio hot spring. Northern Lazio, particularly around Viterbo, is blessed with copious amounts of outdoor thermal pools, a popular place for couples, families and locals to relax and be nurtured by the water’s therapeutic qualities.

Possibly the best of a quality bunch is the II Bagnaccio spring, six kilometres to the North of Viterbo, where you will find several pools that have been carved out of white clay in a pastoral landscape that has remained practically unaltered since Etruscan times.

La Riserva Naturale Monte Rufeno

Talking about ‘wildness’, if it is a touch of untamed, completely natural and remote beauty you are yearning, then spending a day at the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, will more than satisfy your desires. This 7,000 acre natural park of rolling oak forest borders Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany, and is simply stunning.

The reserve and its uninhibited trails that crisscross the reserve, whilst sparse of people, are accompanied with boar and porcupine, among many other rare and impressive wildlife.

As well as cycling and walking, horse riding is a popular way to explore one of Italy’s wildest corners that is there to be discovered.

Vignanello Garden

A stay in Lazio should not be accomplished without taking a trip to Vignanello Garden. This early 17th century garden has remained practically unchanged for four centuries, the height of its many charms epitomised by the labyrinth of immaculately maintained hedges that those visiting the garden cannot help but try and get lost in and try and find the initials of Ottavia Orsini amd her sons, the garden’s founder.

Princess Claudia Ruspoli is the current owner of the Castello Ruspoli and its garden and gives personally guided tours of her inspiring property and grounds.
