Three of the best art galleries in Barcelona
Art plays a major contributor to the cultural makeup of the city of Barcelona. Across the decades and even centuries some of the world’s most important artists have been inspired by the magnificent Spanish city.
As a consequence of its blatant consecration to art and those who create it, Barcelona is lavish in the number of art galleries it boasts. Here are three of the best art galleries in Barcelona…
National Art Gallery of Catalonia (MNAC)
The MNAC is consistently one of the most visited art galleries in the whole of Spain. It’s comprehensive and unique collection of medieval paintings makes MNAC one of the largest galleries dedicated to medieval art in the world.
Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)
Housed in the most awe-inspiring and intricately detailed of architecture, a visit to MACBA to witness its magnificent building is an experience in itself. Inside, the gallery treasures some of the most valuable, unique and inspirational pieces of contemporary art to have come out of the Catalonia region.
Pablo Picasso is the most famous painter to come from Spain and Barcelona is home to the most comprehensive collection of his work anywhere in the world. Since a very early age Picasso demonstrated extraordinary talent, and was a talent that fore fronted and transformed artistic movements of the twentieth century. This extraordinary and priceless Picasso collection is spread amongst five different medieval palaces in the city and provides a unique and unforgettable visitor experience.
The museum was first opened in 1963 and was based on an idea by Picasso’s lifelong friend, Jaume Sabartes, whom Picasso had given many drawings, paintings and prints. Sabartes had suggested the museum was set up in Picasso’s birth city, Malaga, but it was Picasso who suggested it should be built in Barcelona, as a memoir to his lifelong connections with the city.
