The top five secluded beaches on the Algarve
The Algarve in southern Portugal is one of the most popular beach destinations in Europe. It has over 160 kilometres of shoreline and can boast an impressive 300 days of sunshine per year. Here are five wonderful recommendations for secluded beaches on the Algarve…
Praia da Marinha
This wonderful beach located not far from Lagoa has a small cove beneath rocky outcrops. High tide leaves a thin strip of beach, but when it is out you can gain access to other coves, rock formations and rock pools, brimming with marine life. This beach is in the top 100 most beautiful beaches in the world recommended by Michelin, and in the top ten in Europe, yet does not get too busy, mostly due to steep steps down honey coloured cliffs. It does have boat trips that you can take to see other coves in the vicinity. If you are seeking some space and privacy on a stunning beach, this is definitely one to visit.
Ilha da Barreta, Faro
The only way to really get to this beach is by boat, which can be boarded at Cais da Porta Nova regularly throughout the season. Ilha de Barreta is a remote stretch of shoreline about 11 kilometres long, and the beginning of a stretch known as the ‘barrier islands’, which is separated by the Ria Formosa. It also has a wonderful natural protected park and marshland with flamingos. Unspoilt, yet easy to get to by boat from Faro, Ilha da Barreta is great for people who want to get away and find peace and tranquillity.
Praia da Bordeira, Carrapateira
Situated at the mouth of the Ribeira da Bordeira, Praia da Bordeira has rugged limestone cliffs and sand dunes that spread inland even as far as the local village of Carrapateira. You can watch the fishermen teetering on the high cliffs with their rods. This beach is a bit exposed and can be windy, so not surprisingly it is popular with surfers.
Praia do Ancão, Almancil
You can experience crystal clear waters without large amounts of beach goers at Praia do Ancão, which is very close to other more frequented beaches. This site is where the canny locals and Portuguese upper-class go. Despite its secluded status, it still has restaurants and bars close at hand, and various water sports activities.
Praia de Vale Figueira, Aljezur
If you are a nature lover, this beach close to the village of Aljezur may be what you are looking for. It is brimming with natural beauty and is one of the most preserved sites in Portugal. You can climb up the cliffs for amazing views, whilst looking down on an almost empty beach. The approach is a narrow, unpaved track; go prepared with everything you need especially food and water, to enjoy a full day on this fantastic beach.
