What’s happening in Aix en Provence in 2010

Here’s a comprehensive list of Aix en Provence’s calendar of events for 2010:

January:

Old Book Market – held on Aix’s place de l’Hôtel de Ville, you’ll discover rare and antique editions of all manner of literature.

February:

Stamp Fair and Philatelists Festival – this is an annual event happening in mid-February, which attracts stamp collectors, both amateur and professional from all over the World.

 

March:

The Tambourin Festival is as it suggests… a series of evening concerts featuring the ‘tambourin’, lots of fun that brings together over 300 musicians.

April:

Semaine Sainte Musicale en Aix – this takes place around mid-April and is in fact a festival comprising a series of concerts of sacred music.

May:

Salon des Antiquaires which is held at Le Tholonet is an antique fair which attracts dozens of leading antique dealers from all over the South of France and further afield. Definitely worth a visit if you like French antiques.

June:

The Aix en Provence Festival is the highlight in Aix’s annual calendar of events. It starts in June and runs through to mid-July. The festival attracts the best in classical music and opera, with concerts held in historic buildings throughout the city. Have to experience this to believe it!

Musique dans la Rue is a series of free concerts (classical to pop) that takes place mid-June and is held through the centre of Aix en Provence.

July:

The Alpes Retro Antique Car Show is a coming together of some of the finest automobiles in the World. They tour the streets of Aix for hours.

Don’t miss the Baroque Music Festival which is performed by the Ensemble of the Festes d’Orphée, with choir, vocal and instrumental soloist performances.

If opera, theatre and classical music is your thing then the Nuit d’Ete a Aix en Provence held at the Cloitre des Oblats in the centre of Aix is well worth a visit. The program runs for a month.

Held on the last Sunday in July on the Cours Mirabeau the Fair of the Vineyards of Aix is a good opportunity to taste and purchase wines of the region.

August:

August see the coming together of classical and modern dance companies from all over the world to perform at the Festival Internationale de Danse.

September:

Fête Mistralienne is a show of dancers who parade through Aix before gathering around the statue of Frédéric Mistral in the Parc Jourdan to pay homage to this local poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904.

Don’t forget to check out the 5e Festival de la Chanson Francaise which is a series of concerts by French musicians held in venues throughout Aix.

October:

Les Nuits Pianistiques is a series of piano recitals, chamber music and soloist performances that take place between October to December

November:

Le Festival Image de Ville is a festival of architecture and urban film. Screenings are shown in a variety of venues in Aix en Provence.

December:

Check out the New Oil and Truffle Fair held in the Place Jeanne d’Arc. The market/festival celebrates the first pressing of the olives harvested during the year. Together with locally collected truffles, there are plenty of gift ideas for gourmet visitors to Aix… a fantastic wintery experience.
