Where does Bradley Wiggins train?

Where does Bradley Wiggins train? The champion cyclist Bradley Wiggins trains on Mallorca!

Winner of the 2012 Tour de France and a gold medal in the time trial at London’s Olympic Games, this summer the seemingly invincible Bradley Wiggins became a household name and much-admired sportsman.

It has to be said though that the British champion cyclist owes at least some of his success to his hard work training with the rest of the British team on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Mallorca offers many impressive and demanding rides, particularly in the Tramuntana Mountains, which stretch down the whole western side of the island. There are also flat coastal rides which are more suited to the casual rider. Asides this combination of demanding and more gentle terrain in the most stunning of settings, it’s the warm winters and blue skies, complete with crystal clear visibility, which undoubtedly lures the riders to Mallorca.

Talking about training on Mallorca, English track cyclist and Olympic champion Laura Trott said in her Daily Telegraph blog:

“We have been beasting it again today in the hot sun, with the highlight of our day being the 10 kilometre climb up the Sa Calobra which has a gradient of seven percent on average but can rear up to 25% in places. Mallorca’s very own Alp d’Huez. I love the routine and the confidence it gives you, putting in all this high quality training.”

With such a vibrant cycling scene on Mallorca, there are many cycle hire shops on the island so there is no need to struggle getting your equipment on an aeroplane. From racers to mountain bikes, Mallorca has a huge choice of bikes available to hire, so whether you are a sightseeing rider or an amateur who wants to be tested to the limit, Mallorca has it all.

There are some interesting cycling events taking place here in the early part of the year. In February 2013 there is a cycling challenge, which attracts some of the world’s top riders wanting to get the year under way. This challenging event consists of five, one day races.

In May,  Mallorca hosts an Iron Man competition, with a 90 kilometre ride through the Tramuntana mountains, a two-kilometre swim in the bay of Alcudia (where the British team bases itself) and a half marathon run through the town.

Gruelling yet inspirational – No wonder Bradley Wiggins is a fan of Mallorca!
