Why is the Algarve a top travel destination for Britons?

After half a century the Algarve is still attracting tourists. Perhaps it’s the year-round mild temperatures and over 300 days of sunshine? Perhaps it’s the long golden beaches being lapped with lucid water?

Or perhaps it’s the riverside towns of villages full of friendly locals, atmospheric restaurants and stunning architecture, which has meant that for more than half a century the Algarve has remained a top travel destination for Britons.

It was during the 1960s when the Algarve started to become a popular place for a large number of Britons to spend their annual holiday. Since this time, this stunning stretch of southern Portugal has risen in popularity amongst British holidaymakers. During the peak tourist season in the summer, the regional population of the Algarve increases to an average of approximately seven million and nearly always makes it onto the top rankings of lists of the most heavily visited holiday destinations for British tourists.

So what exactly makes the Algarve a top travel destination for Britons?

The coast

As the UK has a notoriously poor climate it usually means that during the rare days of sunshine and high temperatures, thousands flock to Britain’s coastline, causing beaches to be heavily crowded. By contrast, the Algarve 200 kilometre coastline typically basks under a cloudless blue sky and is made up of beautiful contrasts of long sandy beaches and quirky coves and bays, most of which have been awarded with blue flag awards for their cleanliness and safety. With an interesting coast made up of fascinating rock formations and caves, the Algarve’s coast is the perfect place for aqua-based activities, such as snorkelling, fishing, scuba diving and rock climbing.

Sightseeing

We have to admit that us Brits are suckers for sightseeing, and taking a holiday to the Algarve provides us with the perfect opportunity to get a top quality sightseeing fix! When driving through the Algarve you barely go 20 kilometres before spotting an ancient castle, fort, cathedral or some ancient architectural marvel standing proudly on a hillside.

The Algarve is famed for its fascinating collection of old churches, sandstone castles and ancient cathedrals, and Brits embrace it with open arms.

Golf

Okay so we’re not all enthusiastic golfers but for those who do enjoy a good round of golf, the Algarve offers great golfing holidays. With more than 20 world class golf courses to choose from, all of which boast the most stunning of surroundings, great facilities and, of course, a formidable climate, when it comes to Britons playing golf, the Algarve is a leading destination.
