Windsurfing on Lanzarote’s Costa Teguise

Being almost moonscape in places, with incredible rock formations, wide open plains and soft sandy beaches in other places, the island of Lanzarote boasts an immensely diverse landscape. The waves pounding on the sand and with a sunny and mild year-round climate, Lanzarote has long been an attractive hub for windsurfers.

Costa Teguise

The Costa Teguise is a particular hotspot for windsurfers. The wind tends to be stronger here compared to other parts of the island, hence why it’s a magnet for surfers!

Playa Cucharas on the Costa Teguise is a particularly attractive area for windsurfers. Here, you’ll find several schools that cater for windsurfing with quality equipment for hire. The schools at Playa Cucharas cater for all windsurfing abilities, from beginners to experienced surfers.

The area where the beach gently shelves into the water, making it an ideal spot for beginners, is cordoned off from swimmers and dedicated specifically to windsurfers. A little further out from the shore lies a reef, which creates an exciting environment for more experienced surfers.

For those seeking a more challenging ride, the Jameos del Aqua, to the North of the Costa Teguise, provides an inspiring spot for experienced surfers. The North-East trade winds batter this northern part of the island, creating some of the best left hand waves on Lanzarote. These long, fast and hollow barrels can reach up to three metres in height, the perfect caper for surfers looking for an exhilarating challenge!

Whilst, due to its consistent wind, the conditions at Jameos del Aqua are favourable for windsurfing all year round, April to September tend to be the best months to experience the unique windsurfing experience you’ll find at Jameos del Aqua to the north of Lanzarote.
