A little history
The village’s origins as a settlement stretch back as far as the Gauls, but the story was in the 12th century when Richard the Lionheart fortified the castle of Penne and it became a powerful fortress. The Cathars, the Albigensian Crusade, the Hundred Years’ War when the English set fire to Penne, and the Religious Wars all left their imprints on the architecture of the village, as you can discover when walking the picturesque narrow streets. The village was once a stopping point on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostella.
